FAQs

What is the purpose of the Weathershield Exterior Flexible Undercoat?

It serves as the second part of a three-part system, providing a flexible, adhering base that enhances the durability and weather resistance of the final topcoat, particularly on exterior woodwork.

How long does the Weathershield system last?

When used as the complete 3-part Weathershield exterior paint system, it provides up to 8 years of weathering durability.

Can I use this undercoat on bare metal?

Yes, it can be used on exterior metal, provided the surface is appropriately prepared and primed for solvent-based coatings according to relevant specifications. Always consult the product datasheet for full details.

What surfaces is this undercoat suitable for?

It is suitable for exterior woodwork, metal, and plastic.

Can this paint be sprayed?

For health and safety reasons related to solvent-based paints, spray application is not recommended. Application by brush is advised.

How should I clean my brushes after use?

After use, remove as much paint as possible from brushes before cleaning with brush cleaner.

What is the coverage rate of this undercoat?

The surface coverage is up to 16m² per litre.

Why can't I return this paint if I order the wrong colour?

This paint is mixed to order to your specific requirements, which means it cannot be returned or exchanged.

Troubleshooting

Paint is not adhering well

Ensure the surface was properly prepared, clean, dry, and free from dust or grease. If painting over a glossy surface, it may need light abrasion. Ensure the correct primer (Part 1) was used on bare wood.

Undercoat is peeling or cracking

This can indicate inadequate surface preparation or applying the undercoat too thickly. Ensure the previous coat (primer or substrate) was fully dry before application. Check that the topcoat has not been applied before the undercoat is sufficiently cured.

Uneven finish or brush marks visible

Ensure the paint is stirred thoroughly. Apply thin, even coats rather than one thick coat. Use a good quality brush suitable for solvent-based paints and maintain a wet edge during application.

Slow drying time

Drying times are dependent on temperature and humidity. Avoid application in cold, damp conditions. Ensure adequate ventilation.

Setup, Compatibility & Care

Surface Preparation: Ensure surfaces are sound, clean, and dry. Treat any mould, lichens, or algae with a fungicidal wash. For new or bare wood, apply one coat of Weathershield Preservative Primer (Part 1) and allow it to dry for 16 hours. For metal and plastic, ensure they are appropriately primed for solvent-based coatings. Always read the Dulux Trade Datasheet 402 for full preparation guidance.

Application: Stir thoroughly before use. Apply one coat of the appropriate coloured Weathershield Exterior Flexible Undercoat using a brush only. For full protection, apply a second coat of the undercoat. Follow with one coat of Weathershield Exterior High Gloss (Part 3). If a strong colour change is needed, additional coats may be required.

Drying and Recoating: Minimum drying time is 2 hours, with a maximum of 6 hours. Recoat after a minimum of 16 hours, up to a maximum of 24 hours.

Tool Cleaning: After use, remove as much paint as possible from brushes before cleaning with brush cleaner.

Storage: Do not use or store in extreme temperatures and protect from frost. Store in a cool, dry place away from direct sunlight.

Compatibility: This undercoat is designed as part of the Dulux Trade Weathershield 3-part exterior paint system. It is suitable for exterior woodwork, metal, and plastic.
